Rotor Dynamics Data Interface and Rack Communication Management
The 3500/20 Rack Interface Module provides the primary communication interface for the Bently Nevada 3500 rack. Installed in slot 1 adjacent to the power supply modules, the RIM supports the proprietary rack protocol used for configuration functions and retrieval of machinery monitoring information.
The module supports communication with compatible external processors including TDXnet, TDIX, and DDIX systems. The standard RIM does not participate in the critical monitoring signal path and does not affect normal operation of the monitoring modules.
For Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) configurations, the TMR version of the RIM performs monitor channel comparison functions. The module compares outputs from three redundant monitors and generates system events when one monitor output exceeds the configured comparison range relative to the other two monitor channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where must the 3500/20 Rack Interface Module be installed?
A: The module must be installed in slot 1 of the 3500 rack, directly next to the power supply modules.
Q: Does the standard RIM affect the critical monitoring path?
A: No. The RIM provides rack configuration and communication functions but is not part of the critical monitoring signal path.
Q: What communication interface is provided by the module?
A: The module provides RS232 serial communication with a maximum data rate of 38.4 k baud.
Field Installation Guidelines
- Install the module in rack slot 1 according to the 3500 system hardware arrangement.
- Confirm that the module is fully seated in the rack backplane connector before applying power.
- Connect external communication wiring using the specified RS232 interface requirements.
- Keep communication wiring separated from high-voltage power conductors to reduce electrical interference.
- Verify the OK LED status after installation to confirm normal module operation.
- Verify TX/RX LED activity when communication with other 3500 rack modules is required.
